As someone who has been a lifelong fan of Air Force Academy football, I was incredibly honored to have the opportunity to sit down with Coach Troy Calhoun. I’ve admired him ever since he first took the helm as head football coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy, not only for his leadership on the field but for his genuine heart for our military community.
During our recent conversation, Coach Calhoun’s deep respect and passion for Home Front Military Network (HFMN) truly shone through. He spoke about the impact of HFMN’s mission – helping Colorado service members, veterans, and their families by connecting them with vital resources by our trusted community partners and to provide emergency financial assistance.
“It’s an amazing organization,” Coach Calhoun said. “It’s transformational for people. Just any way you can help them get back on their feet – whether it’s helping with rent or car repairs – it truly changes lives. And what makes it so powerful is how well it’s run, and the hearts behind it.”
As a former Air Force officer himself, Coach Calhoun understands firsthand the challenges that military families face, especially those of younger enlisted service members who often live on tight budgets. He emphasized how important it is that we, as a community, come together to make sure our troops and their families are cared for.
“We need to take care of our troops that way – to help them with those bridges,” he said. “They have the initiative, the soul, the character. And to be able to assist their families too. That’s what makes this such an incredible organization.”
I shared with Coach Calhoun that since our 2020 merger, HFMN has provided nearly $1.4 million in financial assistance, with 95-96% of those supported remaining stably housed for at least six months or longer. He was quick to applaud the dedication and sincerity of everyone involved, noting that it’s not just about financial aid, it’s about restoring dignity, confidence, and independence.
When we talked about ways he might stay connected with HFMN, Coach Calhoun mentioned the annual Honoring the BraveSM Golf Tournament and Breakfast, as well as the Colorado Coaches for Charity, all of which bring attention to the incredible work being done to help the Colorado military community.
“The more I hear about difference instances where you’ve helped people, it’s resounding,” he said,” And I keep thinking – how do we help more?”
One of the most powerful moments in our discussion came when Coach Calhoun reflected on why it’s so vital for Coloradans, not just those in the Pikes Peak region, to support our military community.
“We all need to realize that liberty is not automatic,” he said. “We should never take for granted that everything’s just taken care of because they’re federal employees. Sometimes, our service members need help with basics – shelter, food, a car repair. And when we take care of their families, they can better do their jobs to ensure we keep the freedoms we enjoy here at home.”
Coach Calhoun closed our conversation by reaffirming his commitment to supporting HFMN and the men and women who serve. His gratitude and authenticity were unmistakable. It’s a true reflection of the values that have made him such an admired leader both on and off the field.
“The passion, the respect, the gratitude. It’s all there,” he said. “For a long time going forward, it’s my intent to help this organization.”
It was an absolute privilege to speak with Coach Calhoun again and to hear his heartfelt support for Home Front Military Network’s mission. His dedication to service, leadership, and compassion for others serves as an incredible reminder of why we do what we do – to ensure that every service member, veteran, and their family has the resources and support they deserve.
